Judge Stan Whitaker will be the guest speaker at the League luncheon on Sept. 12 at 11:45 a.m. at Embassy Suites Hotel. Whitaker will discuss the way the Second Judicial District court works and the way the court and judges are divided into criminal, civil, children and family courts. He will also talk about the evolving guidelines for judges trying to decide which defendants will be held without bail and which will be required to remain in jail until trial.
Judge Whitaker is the Chief Judge of the Second Judicial District. He has administrative authority over all court operations. He also continues to preside over a docket of cases in the criminal court division. Judge Whitaker is a graduate of Sandia High School in Albuquerque, where he met his wife of 39 years, Barbara.
Whitaker taught public school, then attended the University of New Mexico School of Law., graduating i 1989. He was been a civil litigator, worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney, and was a Domestic Violence Commissioner in the Family Court Division of the Second Judicial District before going to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
In August he was presented with the 2019 Justice Pamela B. Minzner Professionalism Award, which recognizes attorneys and judges who exemplify professionalism over long and distinguished legal careers.
