Plan to attend the December 12 luncheon meeting of the League of Women Voters of Central New Mexico to hear what the League’s priorities will be during the 2020 legislative session.

League of Women Voters of New Mexico Action Chair Richard “Dick” Mason will address the luncheon and review what we will be working on during this 30-day session at the luncheon unit meeting on Thursday, December 12. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel at 10000 Woodward Place NE.
Reservations are due Dec. 9 before 10 am to (505) 884-8441 or emailed to lunch@lwvcnm.org. Lunch is $22.00. Members may attend free of charge without lunch and it is now possible to pay online at www.lwvcnm.org by donating $22.00 for one meal. If you register online, please pay by 10:00 am on Dec. 9. The treasurer will recognize that entry as payment for a lunch.
The legislative session begins on Jan. 21, 2020. This is a 30-day session and legislation will be limited to budget considerations and any special items Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham considers important. Dick will get into the specifics of tax reform and state spending which are two of the issues the League will undoubtedly be working on. The league also supports restoring a solar tax credit which expired in 2016 and which may come up during this legislative session.
One important aspect of Mason’s work as the advocacy chair is an effort to establish an independent redistricting commission to handle redistricting of state and local government districts that will occur after the 2020 census. The issue will not be part of the coming legislative session but is an important part of the league’s long-term work. Please join us for a festive lunch on December 12 at 11:45 am. There will be no meeting at La Vida Llena this month, so this is our only opportunity to discuss legislative issues.
