Semi-Open Primaries

There will only be two Primary ballots – one for Republican and one for Democratic candidates. The winners for each party will appear on the November General Election Ballot as the Republican and Democratic candidates.

A person that did not specify a party, wrote Declined to State (DTS), or wrote Independent when registering can choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot when voting, without changing their voter registration.

  • If voting in person you will request the Democratic or Republican ballot.
  • If voting by absentee ballot you will request either the Democratic or Republican absentee/mail-in ballot when applying for your absentee ballot.

Using Same-Day Registration (SDR) for the Semi-Open Primary Election

  • Is available for DTS voters and allows them to use either the Republican Party or Democratic Party ballot.
  • Is available to those who are not registered.
  • Is available to voters registered with a minor party (Libertarian Party or Green Party), who wish to change their party to Democratic Party or Republican Party and vote.
  • Is not available to Republicans and Democrats wanting to change parties. However, they can use SDR to change name, address, or other contact information.

All voters, particularly those who recently changed their registration, should check their registration status.  To check your voter registration status, go to My Registration Information.
